Factors to consider when coaching

1. Time Spent vs. Benefits
There are diminishing returns once a certain point is passed. Fatigue affects performance to a greater degree than it does learning.

2. Most effective use of time
Use as much time as needed to achieve a criterion (goal), then:
a. Practice for a short time with the same intensity to reinforce.
b. Periodically go back and practice at lesser intensity.

3. Massed vs. Distributed Practice
Massed: without breaks or other activities intervening
Distributed: breaks are at least as long as practice intervals
a. Distributed practice is more beneficial for performance
b. Research shows no difference for learning

4. Whole vs. Part Learning
Task Complexity: the number of components or parts to a task
Task Organisation: the interrelationship of the parts

5. Mental Practice
Skill - Develop image of correct mechanical performance
Situation - Rehearse strategies
Mentally practice both visual and kinesthetic images

6. Anxiety and Stress Management
